Professional Profile
Mitchell E .Gavin is 1969 graduate of the University of West Alabama (formerly Livingston University) with a BS in Business Administration where, among other honors, he served as President of the Student Government Association, and was a member of Blue Key National Honor Fraternity.
After graduation, Mr. Gavin worked as a purchasing agent for Golden Flakes Snack Foods in Birmingham, Alabama, and continued his education in night school at Cumberland School of Law of Samford University where he received his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, in 1975.
Mr. Gavin joined the firm of Dillon and Kelley in Alexander City in 1976, and became a partner in the firm in 1979. His current practice covers a broad spectrum involving civil and criminal litigation, domestic and family issues, and representation of various local businesses. He has litigated jury trials in both civil and criminal court, as well as numerous bench trials in domestic relations court, district court and juvenile court.
Mr. Gavin’s practice also involves estate planning, probate of wills and estates, and real property transactions, including title examinations, title insurance and loan closings.
In addition to his private practice, Mr. Gavin served for twenty-five years as an Assistant District Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Alabama. During his career, Mr. Gavin has been involved in numerous criminal trials in the municipal, juvenile, district and circuit courts in Alabama, and handled both the prosecution and defense of capital murder cases.
Mr. Gavin also served as a Judge Advocate General officer in the Alabama Army National Guard, and is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College. He retired from the military in 2002 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. Gavin is married to the former, Marsha Pope, and they have two children, Dr. Angela Gavin Smith, a veterinarian in Alexander City, and Laura Gavin Donald, an architect in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Gavin is a member, deacon, and treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Alexander City. He is a former member of the State Board of Missions of the Alabama Board of Missions of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, and served on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2004-2012.
